Why bamboo chopping boards need oil
Bamboo chopping boards are made from compressed natural plant fibres. While bamboo is dense and durable, it remains a hygroscopic material, meaning it naturally exchanges moisture with its surroundings.
During normal use, repeated washing and drying gradually reduce the moisture content within the surface layers of the board. Over time, this can lead to a drier appearance and a less conditioned surface.
Regular oiling helps maintain a more stable surface condition by slowing the rate at which moisture is lost. This supports both the appearance and long-term performance of the board.
Oiling also helps reduce water absorption during everyday use and can assist in maintaining a smooth, well-maintained finish.
